Lyla Wing

Lyla Edith Wing, 101, of Jackson, passed away on Friday, January 24, 2020 at the Sanford Medical Center in Jackson, Minnesota.  A private family memorial service will be held on Saturday, May 23, 2020 at Osterberg Funeral Home in Jackson. Services will be streamed live on the Osterberg Funeral Home Facebook page.  Burial will take place immediately following the service at Bethany Lutheran Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred to Bethany Lutheran Church, Jackson Senior Dining or County Transit.

Lyla Edith Wing, daughter of Dana and Rebecca (Carter) Zimmerli, was born on March 29, 1918, in Park Rapids, Minnesota. Lyla was one of twins. The family later to Jackson County. She attended Jackson County schools including the Eight corner school in Middleton Township. Lyla graduated from Okabena high school in 1936. During the summers of Lyla’s high school years, she worked as a hired hand for families. One of the families she worked for lived in Bergen. This is where she met the love of her life James Blaine Wing. They were united in marriage in 1937, at her parent’s farm place in Jackson. James and Lyla were blessed with 9 children. Lyla was always a farm wife, having a large garden and as many as 200 laying hens. James and Lyla retired from farming in 1974 and went to take care of and run the apple farm east of Jackson. There was a large orchard to care, selling apples, making cider and baking pies. Lyla moved into Jackson in 1982, after James died. She became involved at the Senior Dining, serving on the site counsel for 26 years and worked as assistant to the cook for a few years. Lyla was an active member at Bethany Lutheran Church near Bergen, teaching Sunday school, Bible school, active in the Ladies Aide, and was secretary of the cemetery association.  She was a faithful rider of the county transit bus, when she decided to give up driving in the 90’s. In 2018, Lyla moved into the Pines Assisted Living in Jackson, and in 2020, she became a resident of the Good Samaritan Society. Lyla entered into eternal rest on January 24, 2020 at the age of 101 years.

Lyla was a caring, hard-working woman. With a large family there was a lot of cooking, and canning produce from her garden to do. She enjoyed being outdoors, fishing, camping, and working in the garden. James and Lyla traveled to many places visiting family. Lyla was a wealth of knowledge about the family. James and Lyla were both very interested in family history. Lyla began scrapbooking starting back in the 1930’s. She was an avid reader, having read over 1,000 books from the public library. In her later years Lyla began to journal, making sure to write in it daily. Lyla has left a lifetime of scrapbooks and journals of memories for her family.

Lyla is survived by her daughters VerJean Skrove of Jackson, Minnesota, Rebecca Gilbert of Warsaw, Texas, Elaine (Mike) Nickel of Roseburg, Oregon, Susan (Stan) Jungmann of Huron, South Dakota and Louise (David) Janssen of Sherburn, Minnesota; sons Larry (Marcy) wing of Oldsmar, Florida and James (Delores) Wing of Corinth, Texas; son-in-law Freddie Mathews; daughter-in-law Barb Bolt; brother Wesley Zimmerli; sister-in-law Dorothy Zimmerli; 21 grandchildren; over 130 great and great-great grandchildren; 4 great-great-great grandchildren, along with many other nieces, nephews and other relatives.

Lyla is preceded in death by her parents; husband James; sons Merlin and Jonathan; daughter Judith Matthews; 3 grandchildren; brothers Dana and Robert Zimmerli; sisters Twyla (Ray) Mier and Nelda (Morgan) Johnson; sons-in-law Sigurd Skrove Jr. and Charles Gilbert.
