Jean Strom was born June 14, 1929 to Oscar and Eveleen Ammer of Monroe, Iowa. She attended high school in Monroe and graduated in 1947, and studied at Wheaton College in Illinois majoring in history and graduating in 1951. Following college, she moved to Greene, Iowa where she taught high school history, English, and girls’ physical education. Two years later, she married her college sweetheart Neale Strom on August 31, 1953.
The coupled settled in Louisiana where they began their family. Jane, Brad, Bill, and Joan were born the next eight years. In 1962, Jean and Neale felt a call back to Jackson where Jean continued to serve faithfully supporting Neale and her family. The couple joined First Baptist Church where Jean put her gift of teaching to work with Sunday School, Release Time classes, and Vacation Bible School. She served diligently on the missions committee, and with the women’s ministry committee. In the community, Jean visited people through Meals on Wheels and served on its board, and taught English with Laotian immigrants. She was also involved with Christian Women’s Club serving on its board and as a Bible Coffee coordinator and guide.
Jean worked part-time for fifteen years at the family business, Strom’s Clothing, and when not helping or serving others, enjoyed needlework, quilting, and gardening. She sang soprano beautifully and blessed many through special music and the choir at First Baptist. In her senior years, she showered her love on her children and their families, hosting them in her home and visiting them.
After suffering two strokes, Jean passed away peacefully, on Friday, November 29, 2019, with family beside her. Jean was preceded in death by her husband Neale (2010), and is survived by her children Jane Brohmer (Gary) of Colorado Springs, Brad (Sarah) of Jackson, Bill (Shelaine) of Abbotsford, British Columbia, and Joan Olson (Loren) of Villa Park, Illinois, fourteen grandchildren, and six great grandchildren.
A celebration of life service will be held Friday, December 6 at 2 p.m. at First Baptist Church, Jackson. Those desiring to make memorials may donate to Okoboji Bible Conference, Arnolds Park, IA, or Camp Shetek, Slayton, MN.
