Alice Eliza Olson

Alice Olson, 102, of Jackson passed away on Wednesday, September 18, 2019 at The Good Samaritan Society in Jackson.  Funeral services will be held on Saturday, September 21, 2019 at 11:00 a.m. at the First Presbyterian Church in Jackson with Pastor Eunice Woodberry officiating.  Visitation will take place on Friday, September 20, 2019 from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. at the Osterberg Funeral Home in Jackson.

Burial will take place prior to the funeral service at the Sherburn City Cemetery at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, September 21, 2019.

Alice Eliza (Mayo) Olson was born on Monday, November 13, 1916 in Jay Township, Martin County, Minnesota to Wallace and Annie (Ells) Mayo.  Alice attended country schools before graduating from Sherburn High School in 1935.  She continued her education for two years at Macalaster College, followed by two years at the University of Minnesota where she earned her Bachelor of Science in Science and Education.  After graduation, she taught in St. Cloud, Minnesota and in Okabena, Minnesota.  Alice was united in marriage to Robert Olson on her family farm in Alpha, Minnesota, on December 6, 1947. 

Throughout her life, she devoted herself to learning and valued intellectual endeavors.  She educated young people in multiple subjects, including science and math, the second of which she taught at Sherburn High School in the 1960s.  She also worked at the Sherburn Day Activity Center with intellectually challenged adults.  Alice helped raise her seven siblings and spent many years caring for her mother.  She was devoted to her life as a farm wife.  Alice resided at The Pines assisted living facility in Jackson, Minnesota, before moving to the Good Samaritan Society nursing home in Jackson where she passed away on Wednesday, September 18, 2019 at the age of 102 years, 10 months, and 5 days.

Alice is survived by her daughter Judith (Roger Cooper) Olson of Albertson, New York; grandchildren Michael and Ellen Cooper; and several cousins, nieces, and nephews.

Alice was preceded in death by her husband Robert; an infant son Andrew Robert; parents Wallace and Annie; six brothers, Henry, Robert, Edward, David, Archie and Daniel; and one sister, Hazel.

Alice will be remembered as a caring mother and grandmother, a true friend, and a delight for all who knew her.

    I am so sorry to hear this. Alice was a very a very loving person! I will always remember all the fun times at the farm playing with what i thought were the neat toys! Alice alway had a way of making me feel better I alway felt up lifted when ever i visited with her. May you all remember all the good time you have had with this wonderful lady! she will be missed.

    Was so sorry to hear that Alice had passed and was going to Jackson on Saturday to see her when I got a call from Carrie saying she passed and her funeral was that day so I attended the celebration of her life!! Beautiful service and so wonderful to hear all family members talk about her! She was a remarkable lady and a wonderful neighbor!!! Always had snacks and drinks when we stopped to visit and I ALWAYS enjoyed hearing her talk about all the wonderful clothes that our mom made for us!!!
