Irene Mary Prochazka, 92, entered into eternal rest on September 5, 2019, at Temperance Lake Ridge in Sherburn, MN.  Irene will be remembered for her commitment to serve others, her devotion and love for God, family, and friends, as well as her exceptional culinary skills.

Irene was born in the Halloran Hospital, in Jackson, Minnesota, on January 26, 1927, to Joseph and Mary (Bunderle) Fiala.  In 1931, her beloved mother passed away suddenly while with child.  Her father remarried in 1932 to Albina Brabec.  Growing up on the family farm in Belmont Township, Irene attended School District 89, and Jackson High School, often living in town with her Grandma Antonia Fiala, during those years.

While playing a game of softball at a Bohemian Picnic in 1943, she met her future husband, Jim.  On January 30, 1945, they were married in St. Wenceslas Catholic Church.  They lived on the Prochazka family farm in Hunter Township, where they raised their four children.  Together they worked hard to keep the family farm in business.  Along with helping with the farming, she raised ducks, geese, and chickens, and sold the eggs.  Her gardens were large, and she canned or froze much of the produce.  The house was often adorned with flowers, inside and out.  She always enjoyed decorating, and cooking and baking Czech food, especially for the holidays.

For many years, Irene was a 4-H leader.  She was also involved in the local Extension Project Group, The Wooden Spoons, being chairwoman for many years.  Irene was honored to receive the award of “Homemaker of the Year” presented by the Extension Service in 1970, and again in 1977.  In 1988, Irene and Jim moved off of the farm and into town.  Irene became even more active in the church and community functions.  At the Good Shepherd Catholic Parish, she was a Eucharist Minister and served as a member of St. Margaret’s Circle of the Altar Society.  She was a member of the Council of Catholic Women, and chaired the funeral committee for several years.  She also served as trustee on the church board. Irene was recognized by the Bishop of Winona for her years of service to the church. She and Jim enjoyed helping with the Bohemian Suppers and were members of the “Dumpling Gang”.  As a member of the church sewing circle, she helped to make quilts, until she was no longer able.

Irene volunteered at the Jackson Good Samaritan Home, and was a member of the Jackson Medical Center Nursing Home Auxiliary.  She also volunteered for many years at the Food Shelf (FAST), and belonged to the Sunshine Visiting Group.  In 1998, she was a finalist in the Angels Unaware Citizens of the Year Award, a program sponsored by the Jackson Good Samaritan Center for dedicated volunteers to the Jackson community.

Irene was a loving wife, mother, and grandmother.  She was a hospitable, compassionate, and a spirited woman.  She was preceded in death by her husband, Jim, of 72 years, her parents, and her brother and sister-in-law Lloyd and Ginger Fiala.  She is survived by her children Paulette (Mike) King, Judith (Ralph) Bergantine, Kenneth (Brenda) Prochazka, and John (Lisa) Prochazka, and by her grandchildren Kimberly (Joshua), Christopher, Joseph (Stephanie), Sarah, Angela, Thomas, Jolene, Logan, and Carly.

The family would like to thank the staff of Temperance Lake Ridge for the special loving care that they have given Irene for nearly three years.  Their kindness is greatly appreciated.
