Mark Wheeler

Mark David Wheeler, 56, of Jackson passed away at the Rapid City Regional Hospital on August 2, 2019.  Visitation will take place on Friday, August 16, 2019 from 5-7 p.m. at the Osterberg Funeral Home in Jackson.

Mark David Wheeler, the son of David and Nancy (Olson) Wheeler, was born on Wednesday, September 26, 1962 in Worthington, Minnesota. He was confirmed at Holy Trinity Lutheran Church. Mark attended school at Lakefield, Minnesota through 9th grade until his family moved to Okabena, Minnesota in 1978. He graduated from HL-O in 1981. Mark played football and was known as a hard-hitting, furious full-back and all-around great athlete. After graduating, he moved to Delaware and built grain elevators with his father. Upon his return to the Midwest in 1982, he lived in Sioux Falls, SD and then Sioux City, IA where he began selling insurance. In 1998, Mark continued his insurance career by moving back to the Jackson, MN area. In 2003, Mark opened his own independent agency, Complete Insurance Services.

He met the love of his life, Danette (Dean), in 1991 at a dance in Windom, MN. They were married on New Year’s Eve in the Emerald Room at the Franklin Hotel in Deadwood, SD. Mark and Danette purchased their dream acreage south of Jackson, MN where they worked together to transform the entire property into a haven. They remodeled the entire house together from excavating, plumbing, electrical, concrete work, and carpentry. Deadwood was a frequent vacationing spot for them, so in 2014 they purchased a house there that they could also call home.

Mark was very compassionate and generous. He wanted to help people in any way that he could, especially playing an important role in children’s lives. Mark served as a Boy Scout Leader for our local troop. He was in the beginning stages of forming a new entity entitled, “The Boys and Girls Club of the Black Hills.” He enjoyed the outdoors, camping, hunting pheasants, golfing, snowmobiling, and fishing trips to Canada. He loved watching Vikings football, grilling, and cribbage. He was an avid drummer and loved all forms of music, especially the blues and rock and roll and couldn’t wait to get out on the dance floor. His wish was to buy his dream 1970 1/2 Z28 Camaro muscle car like he had in high school that he and Danette could restore together.

Mark passed away unexpectedly at the Rapid City Regional Hospital on Friday, August 2, 2019 at the age of 56 years, 10 months, and 6 days. He is survived by his parents David and Nancy; his wife of 28 years, Danette; his son Nick (Carrie) Wheeler; step daughter, Kimberly Bremer; brothers Terry (Tracy) Wheeler; Paul (Krista) Wheeler; Eric (Loree) Erickson; sister Julie (Kevin) Mathias; grandchildren Beau McClain, Hadley, Elyse, and Ayden Wheeler; along with numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.

Mark was preceded in death by his Grandparents.

Blessed be the memory of Mark David Wheeler.
