Norman Atz, 89, died July 13, 2019. Norman was born on July 1, 1930 to Frank and Anna (Pomerenke) Atz in West Heron Lake Township, Jackson County, Minnesota. He was baptized and confirmed at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Okabena and later became a member of Our Redeemer Lutheran Church in Okabena. He graduated from Okabena High School in 1949. On July 6, 1951 he married Marilyn Berg at First Presbyterian Church in Round Lake. He served in the United States Army, and was stationed in Germany during the Korean War. Following his military service he returned to rural Okabena and began farming.
Norman was a devoted husband and father. He was always busy, both in the community and on the farm. He served many years on the church finance board, as treasurer on the township board, and was an active member of the Okabena American Legion. Norman took pride in his farm and could not be idle. If he didn’t have something to do, he would find something to do. Norman retired from farming on July 13, 2019 – a farmer to the end.
Norman is survived by son Rockney (Nitza) Atz; sisters and brothers Marion (Richard) Rumpf, Evelyn Potratz, Merlyn (Arlene) Atz, Myrtle Kruse, and Dennis (Sharon) Atz; many family members and friends. He is preceded in death by his parents, an infant son, brother Raymond, and Marilyn, his wife of 67 years.
