VERINA HAZEL SIEMERS was born on August 16, 1922 in Heron Lake Township, Jackson County, Minnesota, the daughter of Fred and Hattie (Bretzman) Koehn. When Verina was 2 years old her mother passed away and Fred married Beatrice Malchow. She attended parochial school at St. Peter Lutheran School in Heron Lake Township. After her education she worked on the farm before moving to the Twin Cities where she drove bus and worked at the munitions plant during the beginning of WWII. She was united in marriage to Delbert Leroy Siemers on September 19, 1942 at Fort Ord, California. While Delbert was in the service, she lived in Medford, Oregon. After the war, they came home to farm the land that her father owned. While raising her family she worked as a nurses’ Aide at the Sogge Home in Windom for a few years, then at the Lakefield Hospital for 34 years. In the late 70’s they retired from farming and moved to Lakefield. After Delbert passed away on February 18, 2001, she continued to make her home in Lakefield until 2002 when she moved to St Peter to live with her daughter, Janet. In 2009, she became a resident of the Benedictine Living Community in St Peter, where she passed away on Friday, November 12, 2010 at the age of 88 years, 2 months and 27 days.
Verina was baptized and confirmed at St Peter Lutheran Church, where she had been a life long member. She enjoyed cooking and baking bread which she loved to share with family and friends. Delbert enjoyed delivering her “goodies” to the neighbors. She loved visiting with family and friends and even strangers – she was the “social butterfly”. She was a member of Lakefield American Legion and served as president of the VFW Auxiliary.
Verina is survived by her three daughters, Joanne (James) Parsons of Forest Lake, Minnesota, Burdell (Clifford) Kelley of Big Lake, Minnesota and Janet Knutson of Forest Lake, Minnesota, 7 grandchildren and 7 great-grandchildren.
Verina was preceded in death by her parents, her husband and a daughter, Eilene Blackwell.
Blessed be the memory of Verina Hazel Siemers
