IKE DUNLAVEY, 84, of Jackson passed away at the Minnesota Veterans Home in Luverne. Memorial service will be on Wednesday, November 10, 2010 at 10:30 AM at the First Presbyterian Church in Jackson with Pastor Christopher Drew officiating. Inurnment with Military Honors will be in Riverside Cemetery – Jackson. Visitation will be on Tuesday, from 5 to 7 PM at the Osterberg Funeral Home and on Wednesday – one hour prior to the service at the Church.
VERNON ‘IKE’ WILLARD DUNLAVEY was born on September 5, 1926 in Jackson, Minnesota, the son of John Clarence and Ella (Schneider) Dunlavey. He graduated from Jackson High School in 1944. He then enlisted into the US Navy in 1944. He was later given a medical discharge in 1945. On September 9, 1951, he was united in marriage to Ethel Lesch at Trinity Lutheran Church in Montery, MN. He had been a postal carrier in Jackson for 29 years, retiring in 1986. During which time he had also been the Jackson Golf Club manager from 1968 to 1991. He and Ethel had made their home in Jackson all their married life until Ike became a resident of the Minnesota Veteran’s Home in Luverne on January 4, 2007. Ike passed away there on Saturday, November 6, 2010 at the age of 84 years, 2 months and 1 day.
Ike was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Jackson for 52 years. He had been a Legion member for 65 years. He belonged to Jackson Volunteer Fire Department for 39 years, serving as Chief for 8 years. He was instrumental in getting the first ambulance for the Fire Department during his reign as Chief. In addition to family and civic organizations, Ike enjoyed softball, hunting, trapping and golf. Ike was known to have a quick wit and practical jokes.
Ike is survived by his wife of 59 years, Ethel Dunlavey of Jackson, and four children: Kevin (Anita) Dunlavey, DDS of Jackson and their children Dr. Ryan Dunlavey of St. Louis Park, Dr. Megan Dunlavey of Minneapolis, Kaitlin Dunlavey of Sioux Falls, South Dakota; LeeAnn (Brian) Steen of Sherburn and their children Sabrina Steen of Minneapolis, Matraca and Rebecca Steen, both of Sherburn; Ellie (Jonathan) Berg of Stillwater and their children Estee Berg of St Peter and Geoffrey Berg of Stillwater; Kirk (Laura) Dunlavey of Jackson and their children Ana and Isaac Dunlavey of Jackson; a brother, Orville (Arlene) Dunlavey of Apache Junction, Arizona and 2 sisters-in-law, Fern Call of Edina and Hattie Lesch of Fairmont and many nieces and nephews.
Ike was preceded in death by his parents, 3 brothers, Clifford, Lawrence, and Glen and 2 sisters, Myrtle Hansen and Eva Ulsund.
