New PictureBERNADINE WELKER, 86, of Jackson passed away at the Sanford Hospital in Sioux Falls, South Dakota on Friday, September 24, 2010.  Mass of Christian Burial will be on Tuesday, 9-28-10 at 2:30 PM at the Church of the Good Shepherd with Father Larry Brixius officiating.  Burial will be in Good Shepherd Cemetery – Jackson.  Visitation will be on Monday from 6 to 8 PM with a Rosary at 7:30 PM at the Osterberg Funeral Home and on Tuesday – one hour prior to the service at the Church.

BERNADINE ANN WELKER was born on May 20, 1924 in Enterprise Township, Jackson County, Minnesota, the daughter of Steven and Augusta (Albrecht) Maras.  She had attended Peace Memorial, District 107 and later Jackson High School.  She was united in marriage to Harold Welker on October 14, 1944 at the Parish House in Jackson.  After marriage they lived in Jackson before moving to Lakefield in 1957 and she later moved back to Jackson in 1975.  She had worked for Railway Motors during the World War II both in Winona and Fairmont.  She worked seasonally at DeKalb in Jackson.  She operated a second hand store in Lakefield.  She worked several years at Santee in Jackson.  She enjoyed taking care of the elderly in their homes as well as working at the Nursing Home in Jackson.  She finally retired at the age of 75 years. Bernadine passed away at the Sanford Hospital in Sioux Falls, South Dakota on Friday, September 24, 2010 at the age of 86 years, 4 months and 4 days.

 Bernadine was a member of The Church of the Good Shepherd in Jackson and St. Josephs’ Catholic Church in Lakefield.  She had been a member of the VFW and American Legion Auxiliary.  She loved gardening, picking mushrooms/asparagus and canning just about anything.  For many years she helped get the Jackson County fair grounds ready by taking care of the flower beds and getting the buildings ready, and enjoyed the Grand Nationals in Jackson. She enjoyed sewing and making many quilts  but her greatest joy was her children and grandchildren.

 Bernadine in survived by her 5 children, Judy Weires and special friend, Bob Hudson of Lakefield, Thomas Welker of Grand Rapids, Minnesota, Debby (Wayne) Mau of Windom, Linda (Jim) Prestin of Sioux Falls, South Dakota and Jolene Bannister of Jackson. 14 grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren, 1 great-great-grandson, and 1 sister, Marge Little of Garden Grove, California.

 Bernadine was preceded in death by her parents, a son, Dale Welker, 7 brothers, 3 sisters,  a son-in-law, Bob Weires, a great-grandson, Ryan Tuckner, and special friend, Phil Herrig.
