Clayton P. Schaffer


CLAYTON P SCHAFFER, 70, of Heron Lake passed away at his home on Friday, September 3, 2010.  Mass of Christian Burial will be on Tuesday, September 7, 2010 at 10:30 AM at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Heron Lake with Father Russell Scepaniak officiating.  Burial will be in the Sacred Heart Cemetery – Heron Lake.

Visitation will be on Monday from 4 to 8 PM with a Rosary at 7:30 PM at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church and on Monday – one hour prior to the service at the Church.

 

CLAYTON PAUL SCHAFFER was born on January 25, 1940 in Heron Lake, Minnesota, the son of Paul and LaVerna (Haberman) Schaffer.  He was raised on a farm in Southbrook Township, Cottonwood County.  After he graduated from Heron Lake High School in 1958, Clayton worked as a carpenter.  In 1961, he joined the US Army and served as a Motor Pool Sergeant in the National Guard until 1966.  Clayton was united in marriage to Myrna Van Dam, on July 10, 1965, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, in Heron Lake.  Clayton became a cosmetologist and after working at a salon in Minneapolis, he owned and operated Clayton’s Salon of Beauty in Heron Lake from 1966 until 1977.  Clayton also worked as a Street Commissioner for the City of Heron Lake, for 28 years.  After he retired, Clayton was employed part-time at the Memorial Gardens, in Worthington.  Clayton passed away at his home, on Friday, September 3, 2010, at the age of 70 years, 7 months and 9 days.

 Clayton was a member of the Sacred Heart Catholic Church, in Heron Lake.  He served as a member of the Heron Lake Fire Department, for 24 years.  He won the State Archery Bare Bow competition, in 1977.  Clayton loved spending time with his family.  He was extremely proud of his four grandchildren.  He enjoyed hunting, fishing, gardening, watching the Vikings, taking his horses on trail rides and spending time outdoors.

 Clayton is survived by his wife of 45 years, Myrna Schaffer of Heron Lake, two daughters, Lori (Tony) DeWall of Heron Lake and Peggy (Ted) Kovacs of Minnesota Lake, four grandchildren, Jordan DeWall, Ryan DeWall, Colton Kovacs and Hailey Kovacs, one brother, Dan (Irina) Schaffer, two sisters, JoAnne (Dick) Spada and Karen (Gerard) Weinandt and a sister-in-law, Diane Schaffer.

 Clayton was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, James Schaffer.
