HARLAN PLACE, 77, of Lakefield passed away on Friday, September 10, 2010, at his home. Funeral service will be held on Monday, September 13, 2010 at 10:30 AM at the United Methodist Church in Lakefield with Pastor Daniel Brewer officiating. Burial will be at a later date.
Visitation will be on Sunday from 5 to 7 PM at the Osterberg-Hansen Funeral Home in Lakefield and on Monday – one hour prior to the service at the Church
HARLAN DALE PLACE was born on November 5, 1932, the son of Fred and Edna (Baumgard) Place. When Harlan was an infant, his mother passed away, he then was raised by his grandparents, Rudy and Caroline Baumgard. Harlan grew up on the family farm and graduated from Okabena High School in 1950. He then attended Worthington Junior College for 2 years, before enlisting in the US Air Force for 4 years. He was stationed at Ellsworth Air Force Base in Rapid City, South Dakota. Harlan was united in marriage to Evonne Lev on October 29, 1954 at the 1st United Methodist Church in Lakefield. After his discharge, they moved back to Lakefield to farm. He had also worked as a Federal Crop Adjuster for the Sydnes Insurance Company in Lakefield and Mike Crowley’s Insurance in Worthington. He passed away at his farm on Friday, September 10, 2010 at the age of 77 years, 10 months and 5 days.
Harlan was a member of the 1st United Methodist Church in Lakefield and a member of the Sioux Valley American Legion. He was an avid sports fan. He loved to watch his children and grandchildren play sports, as well as the Twins and Vikings. He enjoyed playing cards, golfing and bowling.
Harlan is survived by his wife of 55 years, Evonne Place of Lakefield, 3 sons, Doug Place of Jackson, Greg (Gayla) Place of Spirit Lake, Iowa, Todd (Becky) Place of Lakefield, 1 daughter, Lisa Place of Spirit Lake, 5 brothers, Ray (Mavis) Baumgard, Marvin (Betty) Baumgard and Don Baumgard, all of Brester, Merle (Eunice) Baumgard of Round Lake and Darold (Alice) Baumgard of Rochester, 1 sister, Berdina (Harold) Hogan of Worthington, 10 grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren.
Harlan was preceded in death by his son, Randy Place, his parents, Fred and Edna Place and Rudy and Caroline Baumgard, 2 sisters, Hazel Baumgard and Alice Hartman and 2 brothers, Lester Baumgard and Wesley Baumgard.
