 VIRGINIA A. GORDEN, 93, of Jackson passed away at Mayo-Fairmont Medical Center in Fairmont on Sunday, September 5, 2010.  Funeral Servicewill be on Saturday, September 11, 2010 at 2:00 PM at Our Savior’s Lutheran Church in Jackson with Pastor Lance Issacson officiating.  Burial will be at the Sherburn City Cemetery immediately following the service.  Visitation will be on Friday from 6 to 8 PM at the Church and on Saturday – one hour prior to the service at the Church.

Virginia Ardella Gorden was born on July 15th, 1917 in Minneota Township, Jackson County, Minnesota; daughter of John Alfred and Julia (Gustavsen) Swanson. She attended District 113 Country School in Jackson County. On September 14th, 1941 she married Ivar Hodnefield. Ivar passed away on March 31st, 1945. On August 30th, 1950 Virginia married LeRoy Gorden and they farmed north of Alpha.

Virginia served as a sales representative for Hy-Line Chick Company for over 10 years. She prided herself on her excellent flock of 500 Hy-Line Laying Hens. For 15 years, she worked in the kitchen at the Good Samaritan Home as a cook.Virginia loved to bake and was known for her famous rhubarb pie and home-made dinner rolls. One of her favorite pastimes was gardening and canning all the fresh produce. She was an active member of Our Savior’s Lutheran Church, where she taught Sunday School, was involved in Ladies Circle and enjoyed sewing quilts for the missionaries. Virginia loved to travel and was able to take many trips around the United States and Canada after retirement. Many summers were spent vacationing at a cottage on Spirit Lake with children and grandchildren. She enjoyed visiting with friends and inviting company over to her home. When you went to Virginia’s, there was always a fresh pot of coffee and cookies, bars or pie awaiting your arrival.

Virginia is survived by her four children, Sandra (Joe) Furlan of Joliet, IL, Sharon (John) Kampert of Amherst, WI, Lowell Gorden of Alpha, MN, Lynette (Doug) Lusk of Jackson, MN; one son-in-law, Lonnie Terrill of Morenci, AZ; 13 grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren; one brother Irvin (Pearl) Swanson and three sisters-in-law, Leona Swanson, Marie Swanson and Jessie Gimmell.

Virginia is preceded in death by her parents, husband LeRoy Gorden, daughter Karen Terrill, six brothers Art, Harry, Andrew ‘Barney’, Melvin, Harold and Herbert and two sisters, Edna and Alta.
