Olsem, Ray

Raymond Anthony Olsem, the son of Andrew and Margaret (Dorpinghaus) Olsem, was born on October 2, 1951 in Heron Lake, Minnesota.  As a child Ray attended Fulda Catholic School, later graduating from Westbrook High School in 1969.  After high school Ray worked on the family farm.  On June 30, 1973 Ray was united in marriage to Mary Kastner at the St. Thomas Catholic Church in Sanborn, Minnesota.  After marriage the couple moved to a farm in Dundee, Minnesota where they have resided ever since.  Ray passed away at their home on Friday, August 27, 2010 at the age of fifty-eight years, ten months and twenty-five days.

Ray was a lifetime member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Dundee until its closing.  After St. Mary’s was closed Ray became a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Heron Lake where he was a member of the church choir.  Ray was an extremely hard working man.  He loved his family, his farm, and his cattle.  He loved working with his family and they knew this when they would receive a pitchfork or another tool for a birthday present.  Ray was a member of the Dundee American Legion.  He enjoyed playing cards and watching the Vikings on Sunday afternoons.  Ray had a great sense of humor and had a knack for keeping life interesting.  He was known as a generous man willing to give a stranger the shirt off of his back.

Ray is survived by his wife of 37 years, Mary; a daughter, Julie (John) Ludwig of Hawick, Minnesota; and three sons, Anthony (Amanda) Olsem of Clearwater, Minnesota; Andrew Olsem and his significant other April Turbes of Westbrook, Minnesota; and David Olsem of Dundee, Minnesota; as well as four grandchildren, Riley Olsem, Samantha Ludwig, Liam Olsem, and Logan Olsem.  Other survivors include his eight brothers, Paul (Betty) Olsem of Fulda, Minnesota; Jerome (LaVerne) Olsem of Fulda, Minnesota; Father Andrew Olsem of Mankato, Minnesota; Gene (Carol) Olsem of Westbrook, Minnesota; Jim Olsem of Fulda, Minnesota; Art Olsem of Fulda, Minnesota; Daniel Olsem of Westbrook, Minnesota, and Mark (Barb) Olsem of Phoenix, Arizona; and three sisters, Rose (Dave) Freking of Heron Lake, Minnesota; Ruth (Rich) Kastner of Elmore, Minnesota; and Marietta (Dale) Bartosh Heron Lake, Minnesota; as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

Ray was preceded in death by his parents, two sisters, Madonna Hullerman and Josephine Thiner and a brother in law Ray Thiner.

A Mass of Christian Burial will take place at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church on Tuesday, August 31, 2010 beginning at 10:30a.m. with Fathers Andrew Olsem and Russell Scepaniak officiating.  Burial will take place immediately following the service at Sacred Heart Catholic Cemetery in Heron Lake.

 A visitation will be held on Monday, August 30, 2010 from 5-7p.m. at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Heron Lake and on Tuesday, one hour prior to the services at the church.
