Laverne E. Bute, 93, of Jackson passed away at the Jackson Good Samaritan Center on Sunday, August 01, 2010. Funeral services will be held at the First Presbyterian Church in Jackson on Wednesday, August 4, 2010 beginning at 2 p.m. with Pastor Christopher Drew officiating. Burial will take place at Riverside Cemetery in Jackson immediately following the service.
A visitation will be held on Tuesday, August 3 from 5-7p.m. at the Osterberg Funeral Home in Jackson and on Wednesday one hour prior to the services at the church.
Laverne Ellsworth Bute, the son of Drew and Mae (Dann) Bute, was born on April 19, 1917 in Alpha, Minnesota. As a youth, Laverne attended Jackson County country schools completing the 8th grade before having to help out on the family farm. Laverne was united in marriage to Agnes Penwell on October 12, 1940 in Estherville, Iowa. After marriage the couple resided in Jackson where Laverne and Agnes farmed and started their family. Around 1950 Laverne stopped farming and started driving truck which he continued to do until his retirement in 1980. After retiring, Laverne and Agnes continued to make their home in Jackson. After Agnes’ passing on November 17, 2007, Laverne moved into the Pines assisted living for a short while before moving into the Jackson Good Samaritan Center, where he passed away on August 1, 2010 at the age of ninety-three years, three months and thirteen days.
Laverne was an active member of The First Presbyterian Church in Jackson where he was baptized as an adult. Laverne loved his family, always watching out for his children, even after they were grown, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Laverne loved going out for coffee with his friends, playing dominoes, engaging his children in friendly competition even when his health started failing him. Laverne also enjoyed traveling, collecting toy tractors and working with his hands, either building the occasional model car or working with wood.
Laverne is survived by his four children; three daughters, Janet (Marvin) House of Preston, Minnesota, Pat Rupp of Windom, Minnesota, Mary (Paul) Mohns of Jackson, Minnesota, and a son Mark (Gail) Bute of Olivia, Minnesota; his grandchildren Terry Thobe, Peggy Berge, Mark Thobe, Mike Thobe, Jeff Thobe, Brian Rupp, Rich Mohns, Melissa Nyborg, Rob Mohns, Amy Singvongsa, Megan Bute, and David Bute; as well as 18 great grandchildren, and four great-great grandchildren. Also surviving are his two sisters, Arlene Colin of Beresford, South Dakota, and Betty Bocock of Minneapolis, Minnesota.
Laverne is preceded in death by his parents, his wife Agnes of 67 years, a daughter Marsha Bute, a granddaughter Jenette Thobe, a grandson Dennis Thobe and his three brothers, Clayton, Rex and Darrel Bute.
