DONALD WESLEY SMITH was born on July 25, 1923 on a farm in Valley Springs Township, Minnehaha County, South Dakota, the son of Wesley and Imogene (Anglum) Smith. As a youth, he attended country school and later graduated from Valley Springs High School in 1942. When he came home from the Portland Shipyards he started farming. He was united in marriage to Marilyn Long on June 1, 1947 at Central Baptist Church in Sioux Falls S.D. He and Marilyn decided they would take a vacation once a year and travel. They traveled all 50 states, all the provinces of Canada and a few states in Mexico. Don also traveled to Australia, Japan and China and while he was there he climbed the Great Wall of China. He had placed his hand in all of the Oceans of the World. They made their home in the Valley Springs area until 1960 when they moved to a farm near Sherman S.D. In 1991 Don moved to Jackson, Minnesota. On August 1, 1991, he was united in marriage to LoIna Garner. They made their home in Jackson, where he had worked for many years at the I-90 rest stop and some local farmers. Don passed away at the Jackson Sanford Medical Center Hospital on Tuesday, February 9, 2010 at the age of 86 years, 6 months and 15 days.
Donald was a member of the Ben Clare United Methodist Church in Valley Springs before transferring his membership to the United Methodist Church in Jackson. He had been the Chairman of the Valley PTA and the Minnehaha County Weed Board. During Sunday school is when Jesus became his hero and Savior. “He was the best friend I ever had.”
Don is survived by his wife of 18 years, LoIna Smith of Jackson, 5 children, Kenneth (Bonnie) Smith of Cooperstown, North Dakota, Marlene Smith of Garretson, South Dakota, Norman (Julie) Smith of Brandon, South Dakota, David (Patti) Smith of Sioux Falls, South Dakota, Janice Berhane of Sioux Falls, South Dakota. 7 grandchildren, Nancy DeVries, Wesley Smith, Jessica Smith, Holly Davidson, Joshua Smith, Brad Smith, and Carly Kammer. 3 great grandchildren Natalee DeVries, Stella Kammer, and Trenton Kammer.
Don was preceded in death by his parents, and 2 brothers, Gilbert Smith and infant Hanford Smith.
