John O’Connor


John O’Connor, 46, of rural Lakefield, passed away on Wednesday, January 6, 2010 at the Avera-McKennon Hospital in Sioux Falls, South Dakota. A Mass of Christian Burial will take place on Monday, January 11, 2010 at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Lakefield, beginning at 10:30 a.m. with Father Peter Schuster officiating. Burial will take place immediately following the service at Good Shepherd Catholic Cemetery. A visitation will be held on Sunday, January 10, 2010 from 2-6 p.m. at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Lakefield, with a prayer service beginning at 6 p.m., and on Monday, one hour prior to the services at the church. John Thomas O’Connor, son of Bill and LaVonne (Schnieder) O’Connor, was born on August 5, 1963 in Lakefield, MN. John graduated from Lakefield High School in 1982 and graduated from Worthington Community College with an Associate of Arts degree. He played football in both high school and college. He furthered his education at the University of Minnesota, graduating with a Bachelor degree in Animal Science and Ag Economics. He was a member of Farmhouse Fraternity while at the University of Minnesota. Following his education, John served an agricultural internship in Denmark. He then moved to Geneseo, Illinois and was employed by Wayne Feeds for two and a half years. In 1989 he pursued his lifelong passion and returned to the family farm. He married Lori Wedeking on September 16, 1995 at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Lakefield. Following their marriage, the couple resided on the family farm in Sioux Valley, MN. John was a member of St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Lakefield and of the Knights of Columbus. He recently served on the Farmers Coop Association Board of Directors, which provided John with a great new challenge. He enjoyed history, especially Jackson County and family history. Most of all, family, friends, and farming were the most significant priorities in John’s life. John was a caring and giving person. He continued these values in death through the gift of organ and tissue donation. His many gifts will benefit and enrich the lives of numerous families. John passed away Wednesday morning, January 6, 2010 at Avera McKennan Hospital in Sioux Falls, South Dakota at the age of 46 years, five months and one day. John is survived by his wife Lori and their two children, Jared and Kayla, of rural Lakefield; his parents Bill and LaVonne O’Connor of Lakefield; a brother Dan (Shannon) O’Connor of St. Peter, MN and their children Calvin and Courtney; four sisters; Margaret (Peg and Tim) Tressel of Thousand Oaks, CA and their children Josie, Ellie and John; Joan (Paul) Goossens of Duluth , MN and their children Sean, Luke and Jude; Sue (Denny) Schommer of New Ulm, MN and their children Mark, Emily and Matthew; Barb (Al) Grube of Cottonwood, MN and their children Caroline, Elizabeth and William; his mother and father-in-law, Roger and Darlene Wedeking, of Lakefield; brothers-in-law John Wedeking of Lakefield and children Danielle and Hannah; Vic (Lynette) Wedeking of Valley Springs, SD, and their children Matthew and Mark; Gene Wedeking of Lakefield and his daughter Shawna; Ron (Kay) Wedeking of Lakefield; and sister-in-law Kathy (Dennis) Poelaert of Lakefield and their children Cody and Brittany.
