Geraldine Matejka

Geraldine Matejka, 92, of Las Vegas, formerly of Lakefield, passed away on January 6, 2010 at the Eljen Convalescent Hospital and Retirement Home in Las Vegas, Nevada.  Funeral services are planned for Friday, January 15, 2010 at 1:30 p.m. at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Lakefield with Pastor Jonathan Nack officiating.  Burial will take place at Memory Gardens in Worthington following the service.

A visitation will take place on Thursday, January 14, 2010 from 5-7 p.m.  at the Osterberg-Hansen Funeral Home in Lakefield, and on Friday one hour prior to the services at the church.

In Lieu of flowers memorial are preferred to Lutherans for Life.

Geraldine Jane Matejka, the daughter of James and Cora (Schroeder) Goering, was born on March 18, 1917 in Artesian, South Dakota, where Geraldine was baptized. The family moved to Jackson, Minnesota in 1933, where she graduated from Jackson High School in 1934.  She married Lawrence Matejka at Mountain Home, Arkansas in 1936.   Following their marriage the couple farmed for many years in the Sioux Valley area.  Gerry and Lawrence were confirmed in the Lutheran faith at Trinity Lutheran Church in Sioux Valley on July 21, 1946.  They retired to Lakefield in the early 1980s. After Lawrence’s passing on October 18, 2008, Geraldine moved to Conifer, Colorado to be near her daughter, before moving to Las Vegas, Nevada to be with her son. Geraldine passed away at the Eljen Convalescent Hospital and Nursing Home on January 6, 2010 at the age of ninety-two years, nine months, and nineteen days.

Geraldine and Lawrence were members of the Immanuel Lutheran Church in Lakefield.  They enjoyed Traveling and visiting with their friends.  Geraldine’s passion was playing the organ for Trinity Lutheran and Immanuel Lutheran Churches.  A few years ago she was honored for 50 years of service to the Lord for her music ministry.Geraldine is survived by her daughter Laurene (Paul) Johnson of Conifer, Colorado and her son Lauren (Inge) Matejka of Las Vegas, Nevada. Also surviving are five grandchildren, twelve great-grandchildren and five great-great-grandchildren. Other survivors include her Sister Audrey (Goodwin) Youngren and several nieces and nephews. Geraldine was preceded in death by her parents, her husband of seventy-one years, Lawrence, three sisters, a brother and a great granddaughter.

Blessed be the memory of Geraldine Jane Matejka, she will be missed.
