Wilbert “Bill” Harry Olson
WILBERT H. OLSON, 83, of Wichita, Kansas, formerly of Jackson, passed away on Saturday, January 10, 2009 at the Gaalachia Heart Hospital in Wichita. Funeral service will be on Saturday, January 17, 2009 at 10:00 AM at Our Savior’s Lutheran Church in Jackson with Pastor Martin Lucin officiating. Burial will be in Sunset Memorial Cemetery – Jackson.
Visitation will be on Friday, 1-16-09, from 6 to 8 PM at the Osterberg Funeral Home and on Saturday – one hour prior to the service at the Church.
Wilbert “Bill” Harry Olson was born on November 13, 1925, in Mountain Lake, Minnesota, the son of Harry and Emma (Gohr) Olson. As a youth Bill attended school in Kimball Township, graduating from Windom High School in 1943. After high school Bill helped on the family farm until 1946 when he started working for Federated Rural Electric. On June 1, 1947 Bill was united in marriage to Edna Mae Halverson at Hauge’s Lutheran Church north of Jackson. After marriage Bill continued to work for Federated Rural Electric until 1963 when he and Edna moved to Oklahoma, New Mexico, and Texas and finally settling in Wichita, Kansas in 1983 where Bill worked as a hotel manager for the Mark VIII Hotel. Bill retired from Hotel Management in 2000. Bill passed away at the Gaalachia Heart Hospital on Saturday January 10, 2009 at the age of 83 years, one month, and 28 days.
Bill was a very active member in his churches. He and Edna were members of Our Savior’s Lutheran Church in Jackson from 1947-1963, after which they attended numerous other churches in their travels before settling at the Gloria Dei Lutheran Church in Wichita. Bill was also a very active member of the community. He was a member of the Junior Chamber of Commerce in Jackson, a member of the Altus Optimist Club and Chamber of Commerce in Altus, New Mexico, a member of the Wichita Chamber of Commerce, and he was also a Troop Leader for the Boy Scouts of America. After retirement Bill volunteered as a driver for the American Red Cross. Bill loved to read as well as play golf. He and Edna enjoyed playing card games such as Canasta, “500”, and rummy, as well as playing “Chicken Foot” a dice game.
Bill is survived by his wife of 61 years Edna Mae of Wichita, Kansas; his children, Gary (Deb) Olson of Rawlins, Wyoming; Don Olson of Ramah, New Mexico; Rick (Sheryl) Olson of Wichita, Kansas; and Kathy (David) Peters of Gulf Shores, Alabama; eleven grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren. Bill is also survived by one sister, Marilyn (Duane) Christensen of Windom, Minnesota.
Bill was preceded in death by his parents, one brother Marvin and two sisters Delores and Carol.
